Interview with Cheree Alsop

What’s your favorite thing about being a writer?
I love the creativity. My mind is always working. I love the fact that I can now put these stories that are always brewing in my thoughts out there, and that readers are devouring them as soon as I get them written! I love hearing from readers who relate to my characters and who grow to love them as I do. There is such a feeling of freedom in being a writer, and I love it very much.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
I grew up in a small farm town and read everything I could get my hands on. I loved Louis L’amour first, and read every book of his that was in our school library. Westerns will always hold a dear place in my heart. Reading inspired my imagination so that when I went to bed at night, I stayed awake thinking of stories. Every car trip was an opportunity to live adventures, and that lead inevitably to writing.

Who inspired you to write?
I used to write letters to my favorite authors telling them how much I loved their books and that I hoped one day to be able to share my stories with the world. One author, Robin Hobb, the author of the Farseer Trilogy and the newly released Fool’s Assassin that I would tell everyone to read, wrote back a very supportive, kind letter. Ever since then, we’ve kept up a friendship through email and she’s been such a great supporter of my writing career. I am very grateful for her.

Are any characters named after anyone in your real life?
Characters in my books and the people in my life stay very separate. The reason for this is because I feel every character needs to be fully fleshed out, and if they are patterned after someone I already know, it takes away from that. We become who we are through the experiences we go through, and the experiences in my books shape my characters. I would love to meet them!

What book are you currently reading?
I am currently reading The Outsider by Penelope Williamson. I am currently writing young adult urban fantasy, and I never read the same genre I’m writing. It helps me keep the stories straight in my mind.

If you could have lunch with any author, past or present, who would it be?
Definitely with Robin Hobb. She has been such a great supporter and I would love to tell her in person just how much of an impact she has had on me and how grateful I am for her.

Can you share with us what you’re currently working on?
I am writing Werewolf Academy Book 3: Instinct. It’s a continuation of Alex and Cassie’s story about twins who lost their parents and live at the Werewolf Academy where they learn how to survive a world that is intent on destroying their kind.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I am the mother of four year old twin boys and an eleven year old daughter. I find my writing time between chasing my boys around the backyard and going on hiking adventures, helping my daughter with soccer and acting, and going on motorcycle adventures with my husband. I am also the bass player for our band, Alien Landslide.
