Interview with Gena Showalter
What’s a typical work day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily goal?
— My workday depends on what stage I’ve reached in the writing process.
Rough draft, on time — a chapter a day, six days a week. Can take anywhere from two to eight hours a day.
Rough draft, running behind – two chapters a day, six days a week. Can take anywhere from six to twelve hours a day.
Revisions – I work twelve to fourteen hours, six days a week.
Editing – I go over 50-100 pages a day, six days a week, however long that takes.
I start when I wake up, and I go, go, go until I’ve finished the day’s goal. I do take a break to have lunch at/from my favorite local restaurant (Stuffed Olive) and walk my dogs.
What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? How would you answer that?
— I have been asked everything you can possibly imagine LOL From money, to sex, to family. So, I’ll always lean toward the easy stuff. Like…what’s my favorite TV show?
(New Girl – makes me smile the whole time I watch)
If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?
–I debated between two:
It’s Okay to Smile With Blood on Your Teeth
Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?
–I am a huge fan of Jill Monroe, Kresley Cole, Roxanne St. Claire, Kristen Painter, Louisa Edwards, Nalini Singh, Jeaniene Frost, Karen Marie Moning, Larissa Ione, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Katie McGarry, Sylvia Day, and so many more. And I’ve recently discovered Jamie McGuire, Abbi Glines, and Katy Evans. All such gifted storytellers!
What are you currently working on?
–I’ve been a busy, busy bee. I just turned in the final copy of The Darkest Craving (Lords of the Underworld, a July 30th, 2013 release). A little about it—
Having endured weeks of torture in the bowels of hell, Kane wants nothing to do with his beautiful rescuer, Josephina Aisling. The half-Fae female threatens to awaken the demon of Disaster inside him—a beast he’s determined to kill, no matter the price. Josephina is hunted by a brutal enemy—her royal family—and Kane is her only source of protection. He’s also the only male to ever set her aflame, and even he succumbs to the heat. But as they navigate the treacherous world of the Fae, they are forced to make a choice: live apart…or die together.
I’m working on the copy edits for Through the Zombie Glass (White Rabbit Chronicles, a Sept 24, 2013 release). A little about it—
Zombies stalk the night. Forget blood and brains. These monsters hunger for human souls. Sadly, they’ve got mine…
Alice Bell has lost so much. Family. Friends. A home. She thought she had nothing else to give. She was wrong.
After a new zombie attack, strange things begin to happen to her. Mirrors come to life, and the whispers of the dead assault her ears. But the worst? A terrible darkness blooms inside her, urging her to do very wicked things.
She’s never needed her team of zombie slayers more, but ultra bad-boy Cole Holland, the leader and her boyfriend, suddenly withdraws from her…from everyone. Now, with her best friend Kat at her side, Ali must kill the zombies, uncover Cole’s secret and learn to fight the darkness.
But the clock is ticking…and if she fails at a single task, they’re all doomed.
And last but not least, I’ve got revisions for Black and Blue (Otherworld Assassins, an October 24th, 2013 release ) coming in any day.
HE IS EVERY WOMAN’S FANTASY. . .
Corbin Blue is a man of many talents. One of the most powerful otherworlders ever born, he is wealthy, a professional football star, and a legend in the bedroom. But only a select few know he is also a black ops agent…and there is no better killer. When he and his crew are attacked and separated, he’s forced to turn to his boss’s daughter for help—a woman with even more secrets than Blue. . . .
SHE BECOMES HIS ONLY OBSESSION…
Evangaline Black has always been wary, guarded. No man has ever breeched her walls. Until Blue. He has never been denied something he wants, and now, he’s decided he wants her. As he sweeps her into his double life of seduction, intrigue, and danger, he helps her see beyond the darkness of her past. But as an enemy closes in, Blue will have to let Evie go to keep her safe—even though he’d rather die than live without her…
It has been a roller coaster of work, but I’m blessed to do it!
