When a self-conscious young woman discovers the boy in drama

 The Earth Painter
is a Young Adult Supernatural Romance set in the small mill town of Chesnee,
SC. It revolves around Holly Scruggs, whose family has just moved back to
Chesnee after her dad lost his job along with pretty much everything they
owned. Her image conscious parents correct her to the point of brokenness until
she meets Theo. He is the artist responsible for all the beauty of the land and
he thinks Holly is beautiful, too. Together they will fight against Fritz, the
water painter, who hates humans and is hiding a secret under the high school.

Sarah’s Review:  I really loved this book!  It was something different for me to read and I really enjoyed that!  I loved the character interaction and how the Earth became how it is.  I loved the dinosaur and panda talk in the book.  That part still makes me laugh.

Lisa’s Review: The Earth Painter was a fabulous book. I loved the twist on creation, it was unique and quite creative. I really related to Holly, and how she deals with her eccentric mother on some parts made me laugh. I would have totally painted my room too!

Guest Post with Melissa Turner Lee:
Was there anything
that surprised you while writing your book? If so, what was it?
The Earth Painter came to me as I was putting away clothes
in my boys’ room. I saw a girl in a high school auditorium and she was meeting
this immortal guy and finding out there was a battle between good and evil in
her high school. So not only did she have the normal high school angst that
seems so life and death to a teenager, but she now was part of something
bigger. Not to mention her overly critical mom and a new best friend with her
own issues that spill over into Holly’s life.
I’m not sure if anything in particular surprised me. I write
mostly SOTP (Seat Of The Pants) so as I would sit down to write, I might gasp
at what the characters did or revealed that I didn’t know until that moment.
Sometimes, the things Theo said to Holly would make me think about the world
around me. I would Google things after the fact and find out it was true. I
guess since I wrote it, I knew some of those facts subconsciously. The whole
book was eye opening and made me more aware of what the world and life is all
There were problems some readers wanted me to fix in the
lives of the characters that I realized I didn’t know how to fix in real life,
so fixing them in my fiction would feel like a sappy afterschool special where
doing the right thing is always rewarded. That has hardly ever been the case in
my real life so I wanted that reality in the book. I’m asking people to believe
in characters I made up, in a world that I made up, so I had to base everything
else in reality and make it logical.
I think I’m most surprised now that it is out there, that I
have fans as far away as Borneo. That is very exciting to this writer who grew
up in tiny Chesnee, SC.
