Crimson Earth by Anna Soliveres
(Modi #2)
Publication date: December 10th 2015
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult
Synopsis:
Aeva Storm finally has the answers she’s been looking for since the night she was struck by lightning. She knows who she is—and more importantly, what she is. But her secret isn’t hers alone to keep, and some of those who know the truth will do anything to control her.
In the sequel to the acclaimed Violet Storm, Aeva must decide how far she’ll go to protect her identity and to find her missing sister in a world she hardly recognizes. She must embrace her new life—and her strange new body—if she hopes to save the only place she and her family have left to call home.
Filled with action, mystery, and heartbreak, Crimson Earth finds Aeva, Ruven, and Karth on opposing sides as the war between The False Alliance and the Monarchy draws near.
Can they band together to fight against the evil threatening the City? Or will they destroy each other before the war has even begun?

“Helmets on,” Quintas orders. He gives Ruven a
three-second stare before casually flicking a glance in my direction. Probably
reminding Ruven that he’s responsible for my safety.

“I don’t need a babysitter,” I say.
Ruven snorts. “Who said anything about
babysitting? I’m keeping an eye on you so you don’t hurt anyone else.” His eyes
cut away.

Else? It’s my turn
to laugh. “Seriously?” We’re about to leap head first into a life or death
situation and he wants to give me crap about hurting his ego? If he ever tells
me I broke his heart, I’m going to actually break something. Maybe an arm, or a
leg. Then he’ll have something else to cry over.

I shove my head into the tight-fitting shell a
little too forcefully. The helmet has a tinted visor that slides over my eyes
and the top half of my nose. It’s made of the same, fortified material as my
body suit—white on white. On either side of the helmet is my code name:
Hellstorm. No one but Ruven and Quintas (and my three trusted advisors
stationed back in the City) know I’m on this mission. As Violet Graves, Queen
of the City of Light with no history of combat training, the other guards can’t
know I’m here. They will see me as nothing but a hazard, one that could cost
them their lives.

In the eyes of the entire City, Violet is the
portrait of frailty, immature and unwise to the harsher realities of this
world. A girl so fiercely protected by her now-dead father that he left her at
a disadvantage. Without even an ounce of the real-world knowledge required to
rule an entire country.

But maybe I’m wrong—maybe they’re all wrong. Maybe the real Violet
is a tougher, smarter chick than we’ve given her credit for.
